One of the key differences between Western and Vedic astrology is their approach to the zodiac system. Western astrology uses the Tropical Zodiac, which is based on the Earth's seasons and always begins at the Spring Equinox (about March 21st), with 0° Aries.
Vedic astrology, on the other hand, is based on the Sidereal Zodiac, which is anchored to the fixed stars (constellations) of the sky.
These two systems were formerly aligned, but have steadily drifted apart owing to a phenomena known as equinox precession.
Precession of Equinoxes: Why the Zodiacs Are Different
The Earth wobbles slowly on its axis, much like a spinning top does. This movement causes the fixed stars and constellations to migrate backward by around one degree every 72 years. This indicates that over time, the Tropical and Sidereal Zodiacs have separated.
Historically, both zodiacs were completely aligned. However, as of the early twenty-first century, the difference between them is around 23°51'. This gap is referred to as Ayanamsha.
What is Ayanamsha, and why is it important?
Ayanamsha is the adjustment factor that makes up the gap between the Tropical and Sidereal Zodiacs.
Different authors have presented numerous ways for calculating Ayanamsha, however the Lahiri Ayanamsha is universally acknowledged in Vedic astrology.
The shift in planetary placements causes considerable variances in astrological charts between the two systems.
For example:
In Western astrology, if your Sun sign is 10° Aries, it might be 16° Pisces in Vedic astrology, depending on the precise Ayanamsha utilised.
The Tropical and Sidereal Zodiacs provide unique viewpoints on astrology:
Western astrology (Tropical Zodiac) is seasonal, with a focus on psychological insights and personality qualities.
Vedic astrology (Sidereal Zodiac) corresponds to the actual constellations and is profoundly founded in karma, fate, and the timing of life events.
If you've ever felt like your Western Sun sign doesn't quite fit you, you should look into your Vedic chart, which takes into account the real astronomical placements of the planets at the time of your birth.
