Vedic Astrology: An Ancient Science

Astrology is an ancient science that has accompanied humanity for millennia, studying celestial bodies and providing tools to understand both individual and collective destiny. Vedic Astrology (Jyotish) and Western Astrology are the two main astrological systems developed throughout history, each with its own methods and characteristics.

The Tropical Zodiac in Western Astrology

Western astrology, which has existed for around 2,000 years, is based on the "tropical zodiac," a system that links the zodiac signs to Earth's seasonal cycles. Regardless of the actual position of the constellations in the sky, the vernal equinox is the primary reference point, marking the beginning of the Aries sign.

The Sidereal Zodiac in Vedic Astrology

Vedic Astrology, also known as Jyotish Shastra, has a tradition of over 5,500 years, with some sources claiming its origins date back as far as 12,000 years. Jyotish is based on the "sidereal zodiac," unlike Western astrology, as it takes into account the actual positions of the constellations in relation to Earth.

Vedic astrology considers the Earth-Constellation relationship, ensuring a more precise alignment with the actual positions of celestial bodies. In contrast, Western astrology interprets events based on the Sun-Earth relationship and seasonal cycles.

The tropical and sidereal zodiac systems were aligned around 2,000 years ago when the vernal equinox coincided with the start of the Aries constellation. However, the tropical zodiac has gradually shifted relative to the fixed stars over time due to an astronomical phenomenon known as the "precession of the equinoxes."

What is Axial Precession?

Our planet slowly wobbles, like a spinning top in motion. This oscillatory movement is known as "axial precession." The phenomenon is caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and the Moon, gradually shifting the orientation of Earth's axis. This process occurs over approximately 25,800 years and is referred to as the "Platonic Year." As a result, the equinox point moves backwards by about one degree along the ecliptic every 72 years. At present, this shift has created a 24-degree difference between the zodiac signs as seen in Western astrology and those in Vedic astrology.  In Western astrology, an individual born on 10th April is considered an Aries. However, in Vedic astrology, due to the 24-degree shift, the Sun might still be in the Pisces constellation on that date. This means that, according to Vedic astrology, most people belong to an earlier zodiac sign than the one indicated by Western astrology.

Which System is More Accurate?

While both astrological systems are valid, they differ in their interpretations:

• Western astrology focuses on personality and life experiences in this lifetime, using the Sun-Earth relationship as a reference.

• Vedic astrology, based on the law of karma, provides a broader perspective by considering past, present, and future experiences. Jyotish is not limited to describing personality traits but serves as a "karmic map", helping individuals understand the deeper reasons behind their experiences and find corrective measures for spiritual and personal growth.

Both Western and Vedic astrology offer different ways of interpreting how the cosmos influences human life. However, Jyotish stands out for its higher astronomical accuracy and its ability to analyse individual karma on a larger scale, helping individuals understand their path and act consciously to improve their destiny.
